Tupelo--Robert D. "Bob" Collins, Sr., 74, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born September 5, 1936, in Philadelphia, Penn. to Alfonzo and Ruth Evelyn Collins. He was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii where he enjoyed surfing and swimming. He was a Korean War Veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He spent his adult life protecting others through law enforcement. He retired as a Captain with Grenada Police Department after 32 years of service. He was a security guard for the Mall at Barnes Crossing for the past 19 years and also served as a reserve police officer with the Tupelo Police Department. He was a member of the Hughes Chapel Baptist Church. He enjoyed working, swimming and spending time with his cat, Bella. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and enjoyed treating everyone to dinners.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lee Memorial Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Adams officiating and Bro. Reggie Miller delivering the eulogy Burial with military honors will be in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Shelby Collins of Tupelo; three daughters, Tammy Flowers (Howard) of Merigold, Maryanna Chaney of Madison and Stephanie Leach (Jason) of Baldwyn; two sons, Scott Hendricks (Patti) of Saltillo and Robert D. "Bobby" Collins Jr. of Tupelo; two brothers, William "Billy" Collins of Houston, Tex. and A.A. "Buddy" Collins of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in deatg by hiss parents and an aunt, Mary Ella Collins
Pallbearers will be Scott Hendricks, Bobby Collins, Jr., Jim Duke, Richard Carlton, Jason Duke, Walt Shaw, Howard Jackson, Jr., and Mickey Wages. Honorary Pallbearers will be the security officers of the Mall at Barnes Crossing.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 Thursday and 12 to 2 p.m. Friday.
