TUPELO - Mitchell D. Colburn, 58, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Aug. 16, 1952, to Glandon Leo and Lorraine Colburn in Chickasaw, Ala. He graduated from Gulfport East High School in Gulfport in 1970. He served in U.S. Marine Corps from 1972 to 1975. He graduated from the University of Mississippi and the Ole Miss School of Law in 1980. He served as chapter president of Pi Kappa Alpha at Ole Miss and as a representative for Pi Kappa Alpha nationally. He practiced law in Pascagoula and Tupelo. He served on the Board of Directors of Trustmark Bank, American Red Cross and the Christian Women's Job Corps. He was a founding partner of AvonLea Assisted Living and former owner of Tupelo Engraving and Rubber Stamp Company. He was an active member of Harrisburg Baptist Church, where he taught senior adult men's Sunday School class. He served quietly, doing good deeds for his friends and family. An avid reader, he enjoyed playing golf, and good humor with his friends.
Graveside services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. today Friday at the Masonic Cemetery in Amory.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Harrisburg Baptist Church with Bro. David Smith officiating. Lee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Cynthia Rieves Colburn of Tupelo; one daughter, Shelley L. Colburn of Tupelo; one son, Tucker L. Colburn of Tupelo; his in-laws, Bill and Dot Rieves of Tupelo; two sisters, Kathy Colburn and Janice Colburn (Chris) Morris of Blackwell, Okla.; four brothers, Roy (Mary Lou) Yelverton, Bruce (Sue) Colburn, Richard (Roxie) Colburn and Robert (Angie) Colburn, all of the Wilkesboro, N.C., area.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearer will be Charles "Smokey" Young, John Hines, Bill Dickerson, Mark Monts, Tucker Walsh, Claude Gunner, Danny Barrows and Chuck Herrington. Honorary pallbearers will be the Rieves- Twitty Men's Sunday School Class.
Memorials may be made to the Mission Fund at Harrisburg Baptist Church or the Christian Women's Job Corps.
